Was Mahatma Gandhi a Jain?
Mahatma Gandhiji's father Shri Karamchand Gandhi was Jain but his mother Shrimati Putalibai came from a family that observed Pranami Vaishnava Sect. There seems to be a deep impact of Pranami Sect on Gandhiji's secular thoughts because in Pranami Sect scriptures from Hinduism and Koran both are read on certain occasions. But if you observe his life and his favorite devotional song "Vaishnava Jana ... " you will realize the deep impact of Shrimad Bhagavad Geeta and Nishkama Karma Yoga. In his child hood when he was scared of darkness the maid of the family named Rambha told him to chant "RAMA". This name of Rama remained with him till his last breath in literal sense.
