How does the behavior of the rubber bands differ from that of covalent bonds?

Rubber bands are composed of long flexible molecular chains that use up space inefficiently. When the band is stretched the molecules are pulled and straightened out after which they resist further stretch or even snap. The elastomeric molecules are linked with each other along their lengths in a tangle. The rubber band thins as it is stretched eliminating empty space between the molecules.
